Start Recording in a Higher Quality!

This post is for all of you out there that use cheap microphones from phones or cameras  and want to make a little change in your ways of recording!. The technique I use to make these recordings is really simple, and with a few parts which you might already have! and in case you don’t they are really cheap to acquire. You can use any instrument of your liking to test as long as it has an audio jack fitting, in my case I’m using an electric guitar. (Super Caution: Do Not use amplified signals to the Mic Input, unless you know what you’re doing)

The parts you’ll need are listed below:

1. Electric Guitar

2. 3.5mm female to 6.35 millimetre male audio Jack adapter

3. 3.5mm male to 3.5mm male jack cable

(The adapter and cable don’t have to be stereo if you can source mono)

Now connect on one end of the cable the adapter and then connect the same side to your guitar, connect the other side (the one without the adapter on) to the Mic (microphone) input on your computer (usually the pink one)(also make sure to turn down the volume potentiometer of your guitar for now, to be safe not to burn anything if your guitar pickups are too hot) . When you are done, the last thing you’ll need is a program that can read and record your sounds. The program I used is called “Audacity” and it’s legally free to download, here is the link where you can find  it (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/). “If you don’t like Audacity you are free to choose any other program you like!”

(Now turn slightly up your instrument’s  volume and adjust along with your software)

Open up Audacity and adjust your input volume to reduce unwanted noise, then start recording and see if you like the result, if not yet try again until you are satisfied! Then you are ready to go!

In addition, if you want a truly good sound you’ll probably want to invest on an external sound card ! This was an inexpensive workaround that in no way outperforms the real thing, but for sure wins against cheap mics.
